Your first visit will include a thorough history and physical and possibly lab work, x-rays, and tests to determine the quality of venous and arterial blood flow to your wound. Treatment modalities include transcutaneous oxygen measurement, dressing changes and wound debridement. Other services include referrals such as home health, nutrition, and diabetic education.
Another one of the center's treatment methods includes hyberbaric oxygen therapy (HBO). The patient breathes 100% oxygen at pressures greater than normal atmospheric (sea level) pressure while lying comfortably inside an acrylic chamber.
HBO helps some types of wounds heal at a more rapid pace and is used for:
Diabetes Ulcers of the Lower Extremities
Acute Peripheral Arterial Insufficiency
Acute Traumatic Peripheral Ischemia
Compromised Skin Grafts
Osteoradionecrosis
Progressive Necrotizing Infections
Actinomycosis
Chronic Refractory Osteomyelitis
Soft Tissue Radionecrosis
Crush Injuries
Gas Gangrene
Brown Recluse Spider Bite
An individualized plan of care will be devised for each patient. Visits to the Wound Healing Center may be weekly or daily, depending on your treatment. At each visit the wound will be evaluated and its healing will be assessed. Sometimes a patient will need to be hospitalized for treatment of the underlying cause of the wound. The Wound Healing Center stays in communication with your primary doctor like any other medical specialist would. You should keep seeing your primary physician for routine medical care.
